CAMDEN SCHOOLS LIBRARY SERVICE
The Schools Library Service provides vital support to all teaching and learning activities, and its high standards have been endorsed by the Camden Inspectorate who said “the importance of the service cannot be overestimated, both as a source for books…and as a reference point for teachers selecting and trying out books”
AIMS OF THE SCHOOLS LIBRARY SERVICE

  • To support and enhance the quality of learning and teaching in Camden’s nursery, primary, special and hospital schools.
  • To support and extend children’s own learning through the provision of stimulating and appropriate materials.
  • To support and extend the development of reading and literacy skills in children of all ages and to encourage in them a love of books and reading.
  • To support and develop the organisation and management of learning resources in schools.
  • To be responsive to the changing needs and demands of teachers and inspectors as expressed in policy and curriculum statements.
CLIENT GROUP

The Schools Library Service offers a service to teachers, head teachers, inspectors and other education support staff. Primarily children whose ages range from 3-16 use the materials loaned through the Schools Library Service.

The Schools Library Service is available for 35 hours a week 9.00am – 5.00pm, including school holidays, and teachers can visit or request topics and/or information by phone, post, fax or e-mail.

THE MATERIAL

The material provided by the Schools Library Service is for use by children in schools to support the teaching and learning requirements of the National Curriculum, individual school policies and teachers’ expressed needs.

Information materials are provided in a range of formats including books, software, wallcharts, posters, artefacts, CDs, video and audio-cassettes. They cover the breadth of the primary curriculum and are stocked in multiple copies. This enables the Schools Library Service to provide the depth of coverage required to satisfy the constant demand for a prescribed range of National Curriculum topics.
