'THEM BONES
‘Them Bones’ will be hosted by the Hunterian Museum within the Royal College of Surgeons in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, WC2A, with visits from a Barber Surgeon (Rory McCreadie) and then designing pod casts at the City Learning Centre.
The 2 ½ day programme will introduce children to the fascinating world of science, where they will have the unique opportunity to learn about human and animal bones, handle real specimens, and investigate how and why animal and human remains are encountered on archaeological sites and what information the osteologist can gain from them.
Human and animal bone specialists Natasha Powers and Tania Kausmally will be delivering the sessions.
Location: The Hunterian Museum within the Royal College of Surgeons, 35-43 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, WC2A 3PE
Animal bones
The practical session on day two will allow the students to attempt analysis of animal bone, identification to species and how to distinguish the different species and aspects of ageing.
Human bones
In the practical session students will use the methods they were shown to age and sex human remains from the museum collections. They will examine the skeleton for evidence of disease and will finish by producing a ‘life history’ for one of the individuals. |
