This scheme has been designed primarily for community organisations, libraries, Play and Youth Groups, those working with local children and young people, families and the local community to use. Schools will be able to borrow the loan boxes too. There are five loan boxes, each exploring a different theme related to Camden's history:

  • Medieval
  • Tudor
  • Georgian
  • Victorian
  • World War 2

The boxes can be borrowed for three weeks, and will contain a range of sensory inspiring materials, activities and experiences.


MEDIEVAL LOAN BOX

Find out about life in Camden over 500 years ago with the Medieval Loan Box.
Take a journey through time, discovering the people, places and historic lifestyles of your borough.

    • Explore your area, finding out about medieval Camden through self-guided walks and places of interest to visit
    • Learn how to make replica medieval clothing
    • Find out about medieval food & feasts and try out some recipes for yourself
    • Play medieval games and discover what people did for recreation.
    • Plus lots of other sensory inspired activities for all ages.

VICTORIAN LOAN BOX

Queen Victoria’s reign nearly ended after a few months when horses drawing her carriage bolted on Highgate West Hill. The publican of the Fox and Crown saved her life.

A new sign with the Royal coat of arms was Victoria’s reward to the publican. It is preserved in the Highgate Society’s Headquarters. Soon after traffic moved to the new Archway and the pub closed down.

Explore life in Victorian Camden on foot, through books, photographs or the internet or in some of its many museums and libraries. This loan box will be your guide.

Or stay indoors and turn back the clock to a time before cars, electricity and the National Health Service as you enjoy some Victorian activities and games.


WORLD WAR TWO LOAN BOX

Did you know that The British Museum was bombed in World War Two and that many of its objects spent the entire war down in the tube?

30 years after this photograph was taken a bomb came through the roof of this room and ended up in the basements of the museum! Luckily it did not destroy any objects on the way.
