Queen Victoria’s reign nearly ended after a few months when horses drawing her carriage bolted on Highgate West Hill. The publican of the Fox and Crown saved her life.

Queen Victoria sat on the rustic chair in front of the door to recover from her ordeal.
A new sign with the Royal coat of arms was Victoria’s reward to the publican. It is preserved in the Highgate Society’s Headquarters. Soon after traffic moved to the new Archway and the pub closed down.
